Kenai Peninsula Borough committee considers appointments, schedule and withdraw request after volunteer conflict

The Kenai Peninsula Borough policies and procedures committee met and reviewed a slate of advisory-board nominations and a proposed 2026 assembly meeting schedule, and the borough clerk asked the assembly to withdraw one emergency-service board application after identifying a volunteer conflict.

Chair Truesdale presented nominations for two advisory positions, recommending "Glenn" for what he described as "K Ped" because "she'd be a great fit... with her business background," and proposing "Dale" for a Charisma board seat to represent Funny River. Truesdale asked for the assembly's support for those appointments.

The mayor told the committee he had no questions and said he would deliver his report later in the evening. The committee also considered a proposed 2026 meeting calendar that Truesdale described as similar to recent years, noting "only 1 meeting scheduled in November," a December break and "only 1 in July." The clerk explained that the schedule is prepared primarily by the clerk's office and then presented to the president for review; the clerk said Seward and Homer clerks are typically contacted after the assembly approves the schedule.

On the Nikiski Advisory Planning Commission, the mayor recommended support for Ms. Brewer's appointment and asked for the assembly's backing.

The meeting recorded a procedural snag on a separate appointment to the Ketchumac Emergency Service Board. The mayor turned the item to the clerk, who said staff learned the applicant is a volunteer with the Keesa fire department and that borough code limits volunteers serving on certain service-area boards. The clerk said the initial application processing reflected an oversight and asked the assembly to withdraw the application from tonight's agenda so the application period can be reopened to accept additional applicants. "Our code provides that volunteers may serve on a service area board, but, unfortunately, there's 2 specific service areas that the code provides volunteers to be seated on the board," the clerk said, calling the earlier processing an oversight and requesting withdrawal and reposting of the position.

No formal votes or final approvals on nominations or the withdrawal request were recorded in the committee transcript. The committee adjourned at 04:07; speakers noted the legislative committee will meet next (time not specified).
