Willows planning commission approves Cali Love sign permit allowing 'cannabis dispensary' identification

The Willows Planning Commission voted March 3 to approve a sign-permit design review for Cali Love, a cannabis dispensary at 157 North Butte Street, accepting a projecting, double-sided identity sign measuring 36 inches by 36 inches.
Joe Betancourt, Willows Community Development and Services Director, told the commission the submittal includes two sign-face designs that differ mainly in the font and layout of the words "cannabis dispensary." He said staff finds the sign "remains vibrant and recognizable, but does not include overt cannabis imagery, such as cannabis leaves, product depictions, or promotional graphics," and that the proposed size, height and placement are within downtown signage standards. "This sign type is allowed in the central commercial," Betancourt said, and staff will confirm final installation meets clearance and placement requirements and require any additional permits for a sign that projects toward the public right of way.
Applicant Melissa White, who identified herself as the owner of Cali Love, told the commission she prefers design option 1 and can reduce font size and increase spacing so the words "cannabis dispensary" do not appear run together. "We would like it to say cannabis dispensary," White said, adding she can make the letters smaller and space them out to meet design expectations.
A commissioner raised a typographic concern, noting "you need a little more space between the s and the d on cannabis dispensary; it almost looks like it's one word." White said she would adjust spacing and font size to address that point.
A motion to approve the sign permit was made and seconded; commissioners voiced support and the motion carried. Following the approval, staff will issue the final authorization once state licensing and local business-license steps are complete and will verify that the installed sign meets clearance and projection rules.
The commission approved the design as submitted but emphasized the applicant must meet any remaining permitting and placement clearance before installation.
