Commissioner reports new BLM allotment work group seeking compensation rules for displaced ranchers

Myers said the work group will focus on compensation and process protections for ranchers who lose allotments due to land trades or reclassifications. She told members the group is asking that displaced ranchers receive fair-market-value compensation for lost AUMs, be reimbursed for drought-insurance premiums to date, receive more than 30 days’ notice prior to displacement, and retain the ability to maintain and repair infrastructure on affected lands.
Myers said the work group will meet monthly initially and that she and other local representatives have asked to be included in planning and consultation when “settler” projects or other actions are proposed in unincorporated county areas. She framed the effort as an attempt to protect agricultural livelihoods and improve county and tenant protections during monument land trades and other BLM decisions.
What’s next: the work group will meet again in March; county representatives will continue to press for the listed compensation and process protections with state and federal partners.
