Minnesota MRPC approves three regional commissioner reappointments under new selection process

The Minnesota Great River Road Commission on Aug. 14 approved the reappointment of three regional commissioners after staff described a recent statutory change that moves final appointments from regional-only elections to a recommendation-plus-commission approval model.

Andrew George, Legislative Coordinating Commission staff who administered the outreach process, said the statute now directs regional groups to recommend candidates and the full Minnesota MRPC to confirm appointments. "We asked incumbents to reapply, reached out via our communications platform and held regional meetings; three candidates were recommended at their regional meetings," George said.

Commission members introduced themselves, discussed outreach, and then voted to approve the slate. Chair (speaker 1) called for the motion; members voiced "aye" and the chair said the slate passed with no recorded opposition.

The commission discussed procedural details: Andrew George described the application and regional-meeting steps taken in September and October, and Chair said the commission will continue to rely on regional recommendations under the new process. Megan Volke of the LCC was absent but the commission proceeded with the vote after confirming member support.

The commission did not record a roll-call vote or publish individual tallies in the meeting transcript; the meeting record shows approval by voice. The reappointed commissioners were identified in staff remarks as Sally Fine Day, Carl Samp and Meg Christensen, who had been recommended at their regional meetings.

Next steps: the commission will finalize appointment paperwork and notify regional stakeholders. The commission also flagged routine administrative follow-ups to ensure new-appointment notices are circulated to regional contacts and to the national MRPC office.
