Program supervisor Wendy Hernandez told commissioners the city hosted its annual Lunar New Year celebration on Feb. 11 at the Esther Snyder Community Center gym and saw growth in attendance to "nearly 200 participants" this year.
Hernandez walked commissioners through cultural elements of the event, noting that attendees received red envelopes (hong bao) and that foods such as chow mein and oranges were included for their symbolic meanings. She said organizers provided refreshments and that Main Express donated fortune cookies.
The presentation highlighted a lion dance performance and multiple community-based dance groups, including local performers and one visiting group, the Arcadia Happy Dancers. Hernandez said five community dance groups participated and that some seniors who attend related classes performed as part of the program.
Maria Moreno and commissioners thanked staff and performers for organizing the event. Hernandez closed by thanking sponsors BMO, Man Express and Regal Medical Group, which she said contributed financially and offered on-site information and giveaways.
