Board approves bids for Gallatin track, Station Camp and other athletic projects

The Sumner County Board of Education voted Feb. 18 to approve bids and architect fees for several athletic projects, including replacement of the Gallatin High School track and related work at Station Camp and other sites.

Staff told the board 11 complete bids were received and that Biscayne was the low bidder across the three-project bidding options. "We had 11 bids, complete bids," a staff presenter said, and added that the low-bid summary indicated market-rate pricing amid supply-chain and tariff uncertainty.

Staff outlined capital commitments and remaining capacity: board staff reported roughly $27 million already encumbered for capital projects and noted $5.4 million received from the county commission earlier in the fiscal cycle had been applied to stadium projects. After factoring in the projects approved that evening and previously authorized work, staff said approximately $1.97 million remained available in unallocated capital funds.

Board members asked about priority, past maintenance needs and whether rebidding could produce lower prices. The facilities presenter cautioned rebidding could yield higher bids given market uncertainty and potential tariff increases on steel and aluminum.

The board approved awarding the projects by roll-call vote; the motion passed unanimously. Members supporting approval cited long-standing safety and facility-quality issues at Gallatin and other schools, and several members described earlier budget and COVID-related delays that had postponed track work.
