The Purple Rose Theater Company asked the appropriations subcommittee for $30,000 to support two youth engagement programs that the company said expand college attendance and provide education and workforce development opportunities.
Rob Kappas, director of donor engagement, said the programs — College Unite and 30 Under 30 — offered discounted tickets and immersive education opportunities, including stagecraft talkbacks and curriculum‑linked school engagements. He said about 800 people participated in the programs last year and that state seed funding would help the theater scale campus outreach and attract donors to sustain the programs.
Representatives discussed program sustainability and said state funding would be paired with donor development and general operations to maintain the initiative in subsequent years. No further action was taken during the hearing.
