Ypsilanti Township seeks state funds to repair North Bay boardwalk and replace three playgrounds

Ypsilanti Township officials told the subcommittee they need state assistance to address deteriorating boardwalks and playground equipment at multiple parks.
John Hines, a township parks official, described North Bay Park’s half‑mile boardwalk and five bridges as a safety concern due to rot and age and asked for $1.5 million to replace wood and railings, improve ADA access pathways and renovate pavilions and restrooms. He said some renovations will be funded locally and through previously awarded state grants for pavilion work, but the boardwalk and pathways require additional assistance.
The township also requested $450,000 to renovate playgrounds at Pine Park, Tot Lot Park and Water Tower Park, covering removal of existing structures, equipment and safety surfacing designed to meet a 15–20 year lifecycle. Officials said they would partner with Sinclair Recreation for design and matching funds where possible.
Committee members asked whether the township had sought other funding; presenters said general fund dollars, BSR millage funds and state grants would be combined where appropriate. No appropriation decision was made during the hearing.
