Shakopee DECA urges council to expand career‑technical education funding

During public comment on Feb. 17, Adzibon Gondu, representing the Shakopee DECA chapter at Shakopee Senior High School, urged the council to consider ways to increase funding and support for Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.
Gondu described CTE as hands‑on learning outside the classroom and cited the CAPS program as an example. He said data show CAPS can increase graduation rates and make students three times more likely to secure employment with outside employers, and he told the council CAPS capacity (about 200 students) is much smaller than the senior class (~700), arguing for expanded funding or partnerships to increase participation.
Councilors and staff encouraged the student to bring the request to the school board and to contact state representatives about pupil funding; Councilor Whiting expressed personal support and encouraged other council members to weigh in.
The council noted that school funding generally comes from the state and suggested the student pursue the school board and state delegation for formal support.
