Council accepts donation to support women’s water-safety classes

The Shakopee City Council on Feb. 4 approved acceptance of a monetary donation to support the community center’s women’s water-safety classes.
Katie Meyer, aquatics manager, introduced donor Sue Westergaard, who described the program and requested council acceptance of the gift in memory of family members. Westergaard said the program to date has served about 172 women with a median age of roughly 38 and that the current session had 23 participants. “Our reward is when our students become comfortable in the water and accomplish more than they ever dreamed possible,” Westergaard said.
Councilors praised the program and voted to accept Resolution R2026-023 to formalize acceptance of the donation. Councilor Contreras moved to approve the resolution and Councilor Lara seconded; the motion passed on a voice vote.
The council thanked Westergaard and staff for supporting local aquatic-safety programming designed to expand access to water-safety training for women in the community.
