Story County approves $10,000 ARPA grant to Minerva Valley for fixed wireless broadband

The Story County Board of Supervisors voted March 3 to award $10,000 in ARPA funds to Minerva Valley Telephone to support a fixed-wireless broadband deployment targeted at rural areas south-southwest of McCallsburg.
County staff told the board Story County has invested roughly $95,500 in ARPA grant matches that have leveraged about $10.25 million in broadband infrastructure countywide. Mary Phillips of Minerva Valley (on the phone) described the planned fixed-wireless service and the local coverage target of about 99 households in the immediate area, and she said fiber had already been extended to a local water tower to serve as the distribution point.
Supervisors said the county should help smaller local providers when larger auction winners have not served rural areas. The board moved, seconded and voted to invest $10,000; staff will send a contract to Minerva Valley and oversee implementation.
