Cherokee County commissioners review consent agenda of grants, SPLOST projects and purchases, then adjourn to executive session

The board also reviewed a Cherokee County School District request to use opioid settlement funds to reimburse school resource officer training provided by the University of North Georgia; the reimbursement request totaled $17,100 and the school system requested funds to cover training for about 38 officers. A staff member said the county's opioid settlement balance was upwards of $275,000 and that additional checks had recently been deposited.
Transportation and public‑works items included authorization to support a US DOT grant application for construction funding for the Ball Ground Bypass (staff said the county may pursue up to $25 million for construction, with an application due Feb. 24), and condemnation‑petition amendments to add durations for temporary easements on parcels for the South Jet Road improvement project and the SR‑92 at Trickham Road intersection project (the latter will use SPLOST and GDOT funds to add turn‑lane capacity). Procurement items included a proposed purchase of six Harley‑Davidson motorcycles for $142,399.70 (with trade‑ins) for the Sheriff's motor unit, a $129,395 contract to replace the Woodstock Recreation Center gym floor (plus a $15,000 contingency), and a not‑to‑exceed $79,336 contract for concrete and asphalt crushing services for county stockyards.
Staff also noted a lease request for 108 multifunction copiers with Canon USA (estimated annual cost $183,635.46) that was tabled to the Feb. 17 meeting; and a request to award a task order to draft an AG‑5 rural large‑lot subdivision ordinance for $55,075. The coroner was authorized by resolution to enter a memorandum of understanding permitting temporary decedent storage by outside agencies for emergency use (typically up to 72 hours), and staff said the coroner provides the service without charge.
After discussing the agenda, the board approved adjourning to executive session to discuss property acquisition, personnel matters and pending or threatened litigation; the motion carried unanimously. The board said it would return at 6:00 p.m.
