Public Works staff said the project will begin at US‑29 with a roundabout and will include a bridge over CSX railroad and Herring Road; the eventual extension is planned to connect the new road to the Amalajack interchange at I‑85.
Staff described the work as including right‑of‑way acquisition and utility coordination that has taken several years. The county's reported local share for Phase 1 is $4,636,831; staff said federal funding accounts for more than $8 million of the total. Commissioners asked about who will maintain the bridge (county responsibility) and noted the lengthy coordination required with CSX railroad, which took nearly a year for plan approval and an additional nine months to finalize a construction agreement.
The board approved the contract and moved forward with the procurement. County staff said the project will relieve truck traffic on existing state routes and will connect industrial parks and future interchange access.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with contract execution and construction coordination with GDOT, CSX and utility owners; the board recorded no construction start date during the meeting.
