Commissioners back federal grant support for Ball Ground Bypass and approve consent agenda contracts and grants

At its Feb. 3 meeting the Cherokee County Board authorized a resolution supporting a federal grant application for construction funding for the Ball Ground Bypass and approved several consent and manager items.
County manager Martin said staff will submit an application to a U.S. Department of Transportation program seeking construction grants and that the county will seek up to $25 million toward the Ball Ground Bypass. "I'm proud to see our road guys continuing to seek these grants," the chair said after the motion to adopt the resolution passed unanimously.
On the consent agenda the board accepted six items including several grant acceptances and condemnation‑resolution authorizations needed for right‑of‑way work on the South Jet Road and the SR‑92/Trickam Road intersection improvement projects; the consent agenda passed unanimously.
Other approved manager items included:
- Purchase of six Harley‑Davidson police motorcycles for the sheriff’s motor unit for a net purchase price of $142,399.70 after trade allowances; the county said the motorcycles support enforcement, crash response and special events.
- A construction services agreement with CBA Sports for replacement of the Woodstock Recreation Center gym floor for $129,395 with a $15,000 county contingency; staff said the project is funded with 2024 SPLOST funds.
- A services agreement with Adelphi Services Group to crush 5,000–7,000 cubic yards of concrete and asphalt for reuse on county roadway projects not to exceed $79,336.
The board tabled a proposed Canon USA lease for replacement of 108 multifunction devices to the Feb. 17 meeting so county IT and Canon can resolve security questions. The board also approved Task Order 13 with Kimley Horn (approximately $55,075) to draft a rural large‑lot residential subdivision ordinance that would encourage 5‑acre minimum lots and lower infrastructure requirements in targeted rural areas. Finally, the board approved a resolution authorizing the coroner to execute an MOU to allow temporary use of the coroner cooler by outside agencies for emergency, short‑term needs (typically up to 72 hours).
Next steps: staff will submit the US DOT grant application for the bypass, proceed with contracted work and return with follow‑up materials where required (for example, the Canon lease was tabled until Feb. 17).
