Board approves grant-funded workplace learning lab for special-education students at Wyoming East

Wyoming County Schools approved permission to place a grant-funded workplace learning lab at Wyoming East that staff said will serve students across the county and teach job skills such as sorting, cleaning, resume writing and phone etiquette.
The Wyoming County Schools Board voted to approve permission for a workplace learning lab funded by a grant and proposed to be placed at Wyoming East.
Miss Shumate, speaking for special education staff, described models she observed in other districts and said the lab would let students practice practical job skills—sorting, cleaning, building simple items, phone etiquette and resume preparation. She said the district had obtained a grant to purchase the lab equipment and that some consumable parts would need replacement over time but the bulk of the purchase is reusable.
Board members asked whether the lab would serve only Wyoming East or the entire county; Shumate and staff said it would be available beyond a single site and that some other counties use similar labs for self-contained students with more significant intellectual needs.
The board approved the recommendation to permit the lab by a voice vote after a motion and second.
Staff said they will work with principals and program staff to schedule student access and that the district can provide additional information about transfer and enrollment procedures for students who may need to use the lab.
