Transportation advisory committee unveils ranking tool to guide $2.5 million safety program

The Transportation Advisory Committee showed a consultant-developed ranking tool intended to help the town prioritize roughly $2.5 million in safety-focused transportation projects approved for spending over five years.

Mark Ailes, speaking for the Transportation Advisory Committee, said consultants presented a prioritization process that will filter candidate projects using public input, staff scoring, financial constraints and timing. "We have this 2 and a half million dollars," Ailes said, and the consultants mapped physical locations and needs and described how public input will feed into selection.

Ailes noted the town already has a much larger list of projects (rough provisional estimates totaling roughly $27 million) and that some high-cost items may require town-meeting action. He said the committee will post the presentation and a recording so residents can review project lists, methodology and estimates.

The committee also is revising its charge at the town manager's suggestion and plans to coordinate with the climate action and mobility planning processes, including conversations about fixed-route public-transit opportunities with neighboring towns. The work aims to produce a prioritized set of safety investments residents can track and comment on.

Next steps: TAC will post the presentation and recording, continue refining its revised charge, and engage with the climate action and mobility planning teams to provide input on public-transit and mobility priorities.
