Council votes to accept annexation petition, moves process to county review

The Hyde Park City Council voted unanimously to accept a petition that begins the annexation review process for a large parcel owned largely by one family.
Mayor (chair) presented Resolution 2026-03, which staff described as the initial step that indicates the city will consider the annexation; the item must then go to the county for approval before the city schedules a planning-commission public hearing and a final city-council vote.
City staff explained the petition is to begin consideration, not a final zoning or development decision. “This isn’t the final step,” staff said, noting the petitioner will have an opportunity later to request zoning when the annexation returns for a final vote.
Council moved and seconded the resolution and approved it by voice vote; the chair recorded the motion as carried 4-0 with one member excused.
No substantive conditions or zoning decisions were made in tonight’s action; staff said they will bring a public hearing to the planning commission and then the council if the county approves the initial annexation acceptance.
