Students, staff celebrate Cloquet’s 'Unified Champion School' recognition from Special Olympics

Mike Doyle, a physical-education and adapted-PE teacher at Cloquet Middle and Cloquet High School, told the board the district's unified program—which pairs students with and without intellectual disabilities in sports, leadership and school engagement—received the Special Olympics North America Unified Champion School banner award.
Students who are co-presidents of the Unified Club described program activities, voting-based student leadership, expanded enrollment and events including a unified dance, track and swim meets, and monthly invitationals with nearby schools. "We have about four classes in both the high school and the middle school, and our wait lists have been jumping in the last few years and semesters," Cadence Levy, a student leader, said.
Doyle said the program has expanded beyond sports to include inclusive leadership and whole-school engagement; he invited board members and the community to a Polar Plunge fundraiser on March 9 (bus leaves at 8 a.m.; registration link provided internally via district communications). The board and superintendent thanked students and staff for the work on inclusion and student leadership.
