The Whitman-Hanson Regional School Committee voted March 4 to appoint Dr. Marcus as interim superintendent, with the appointment made contingent on successful contract negotiations.
The committee’s interim-superintendent subcommittee said it had held two public community forums (about a dozen people in Whitman and about 10 in Hanson), three staff forums (about 70 participants) and collected roughly 50 Google form responses. Subcommittee members said staff feedback and the public forums informed their recommendation.
Several members praised Dr. Marcus for changing the district culture and for the work on budget reconciliation. After a motion to appoint, the committee amended the motion to make approval contingent on successful contract negotiations and the motion carried.
Members asked that Dr. Marcus submit a formal application to document the appointment process and to ensure compliance with standard hiring practice. The committee also emphasized transparency and asked that staff and the public be given the opportunity to review subcommittee materials. Dr. Marcus accepted the assignment pending negotiations.
The appointment moves the district toward a stabilized administrative team ahead of FY27 planning and the fall staffing cycle; contract negotiations will determine the final terms and effective date.
