Commission approves lease to relocate Bridal & Tourism offices after 5–2 vote amid cost and timing concerns
Summary
The Gaston County Board of Commissioners voted 5–2 to approve a lease to relocate the Bridal & Tourism office into a renovated mill space, drawing debate over a roughly 4,000-square-foot lease, the 10-year term and whether planned venue and parking improvements will be completed in time to justify the cost.

The Gaston County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 27 approved a lease to relocate the county’s Bridal & Tourism offices to renovated mill space operated by Dynamo 31 Properties LLC after a 5–2 vote that split the board.
Supporters, including members of the Bridal & Tourism board and developer representatives, said the new space would provide needed room for staff and for hosting visitors in a growing tourism node that proponents described as a future hub for biking, paddling and festivals. Bill Kostarffin, speaking on behalf of local interests, thanked the board for meeting with the developer and described the development as a larger plan that includes a 40,000-square-foot venue and trail connections.
Opponents and hesitant commissioners raised questions about the lease’s square footage, the length of the proposed agreement and who bears buildout costs. Commissioner Bob Hovis said he was concerned the 4,000-square-foot footprint “is a little more than what we need” and cautioned that a long-term lease could bind the county before parking and other venue infrastructure are completed. "I think it's a little too rich for our blood," Hovis said during debate.
Other commissioners described the move as an opportunity to expand tourist amenities and capture future tax revenue tied to events and nearby development; supporters argued the relocation would free up space in the Joe Carpenter building and better position the county to attract single-tenant users and visitors.
The motion to approve the lease passed by a 5–2 vote. The transcript records discussion over lease term and cost but does not contain a point-by-point breakdown of which commissioners voted which way; the chair announced the final tally.
What’s next: The lease implementation will proceed as approved; commissioners and staff indicated interest in continued oversight of the venue buildout and parking plans, and in returning to the arrangement if conditions or needs change.
