Knox County Commission elects Ben Glaser chair, approves committee slate

The Knox County Commission elected Ben Glaser as chair and approved a slate of committee assignments at its Jan. 14 regular meeting.

Commission business opened with nominations for officers. “I would like to make a motion to nominate Ben Glaser for chair,” said a commissioner during the roll call of nominations; the commission then voted, recorded as “3 in favor, none opposed,” to approve the nomination. Commissioners discussed whether to conduct officer elections by secret ballot or in public before proceeding publicly.

The body also considered nominations for vice chair. Multiple commissioners proposed candidates for the vice-chair role while clarifying the office’s typical responsibilities — primarily to run meetings when the chair is absent. After discussion the commission approved the vice chair selection and moved on to assigning members to standing county committees.

Commissioners reviewed committee assignments including the jail collaborative (a multi-county group), the airport advisory committee, the council of governments (regional planning and workforce coordination) and a strategic planning committee that has not met in recent years. The chair said strategic planning can remain unassigned until there is sufficient interest to hold dedicated meetings. A motion to approve the committee slate was moved and seconded and recorded as unanimous.

The meeting record shows commissioners sought greater continuity and transparency in committee representation and noted that some committees (for example, the airport advisory group) are often filled by commissioners whose districts include the facility.

The commission scheduled follow-up as needed and moved to the consent agenda later in the meeting.
