Director Monroe told the Clay County School Board on Oct. 10 that she will retire effective Feb. 28, 2025, citing family reasons and caregiving responsibilities.
"After great consideration and great deliberation, I have decided to retire effective 02/28/2025," Monroe said, mentioning the need to spend time with her elderly mother and her husband, who has Parkinsons disease. She thanked board members, principals and central-office staff for their support during her tenure.
Board members expressed appreciation for Monroes long service and discussed the process for filling the director vacancy. The chair outlined the standard procedure: advertise the vacancy broadly (including statewide and TSBA channels), accept applications for about a month and consider candidates at the Nov. 14 meeting; the board discussed timing for interviews and a possible early-February transition.
A motion to advertise the director position was made by Mr. Sheryl, seconded by Mr. West, and passed by voice vote. Board members said they will post the official job description, list qualifications per board policy and set a salary range based on the current schedule. They also discussed options for a short-term contract or adjusted dates if necessary to ensure continuity.
Next steps: advertise the position, collect applications, review qualifications at the Nov. 14 meeting and determine interview and contract timelines based on the candidate pool and board desire for transition overlap.
