Adams 12 board approves $1.7 million for Thunder Vista fire and soil remediation

The Adams 12 Five Star Schools Board of Education approved additional expenditures of $1,700,000 to address damage from the Dec. 27, 2025 fire and related soil movement at Thunder Vista P-8 School.
District staff member Miss Brent told the board the money will cover contractor remediation work, student transportation to four receiving schools, repairs to IT and equipment, and other expenses discovered during excavation. She said the project is on schedule for a planned reopening in August for the 2026–27 school year and that additional design and construction needs may arise as work progresses.
"We currently are on schedule at Thunder Vista to reopen for the 2627 school year in August," Miss Brent said. She added that the district will rely on risk and capital reserve funds to pay bills now and that any insurance recoveries or settlement proceeds could offset district expenditures in the future. The board authorized the superintendent to approve future expenditures as needed provided he keeps the board informed.
The item was moved, seconded, and approved by unanimous vote. The district did not present a final insurance-recovery estimate at the meeting and staff said it was too early to know what portion of the $1.7 million will be offset by recoveries.
