Arlington staff outline HandyTran fare changes; council set public hearing for Jan. 6

Alicia Winklevlak, director of transportation, briefed the council on a proposed fare-structure change for HandyTran that would move the system away from a $55 unlimited 30-day pass toward a credit or bundled-credit approach, while retaining a $2 per-ride single-ride fare.
Winklevlak said a public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Jan. 6 and that a public-comment period closed Dec. 12 under Federal Transit Administration guidelines. If council approves the change, staff anticipates implementing the new system in March or April to give residents time to adapt and receive notice. She described the bundled-credit option as offering discounts for purchasing multiple credits at once and suggested the approach would reduce confusion about pass renewals for users.
Councilmember Hogg asked whether staff considered a monthly cap for frequent riders as an alternative; Winklevlak said the proposed system could accommodate a cap in the future and that the bundle option helps riders who go on temporary hiatus (hospitalization or travel) avoid losing pass value. Staff said they will continue to take feedback at the Jan. 6 hearing and present implementation details and timeline to council before any change takes effect.
