Regional transportation leaders’ succession plan prompts questions from Arlington councilors

Multiple councilmembers said RTC members were upset not to have been consulted and suggested possible legal representation to protect RTC interests. Council discussion linked the succession dispute to broader regional priorities; one councilmember asked whether the change might affect high-speed rail planning. Gonzales said the new COG executive director signaled intent to continue planning work, but several councilmembers urged follow-up dialogue and oversight.
Gonzales also summarized transit-subcommittee work that seeks to clarify institutional structure, boundaries and funding approaches; the subcommittee set July as a target to complete its vision work. Council agreed to pursue further briefings on the succession process and asked Gonzales to report back after his scheduled meeting with COG leadership.
The RTC exchange was largely a report and request for follow-up rather than a formal action item; council members asked staff to monitor regional engagement and return to council with relevant findings or requested updates.
