City unveils yearlong plans for Arlington's 150th anniversary, asks foundation to help fund legacy items

Jay Warren, director of Communication and Legislative Affairs, presented Arlington's 150th-anniversary plan on Feb. 24, describing a yearlong program of signature events, coordinated branding, a new podcast called "Arlington Archives," partner exhibits, legacy banners and proposed legacy items such as a time capsule and a possible commemorative sculpture.
"We are starting our first ever podcast ... it's called Arlington Archives," Warren said, describing plans for monthly episodes and historical storytelling. He told the council the anniversary will be an opportunity for editorial content, partner exhibits (Arlington Museum of Art, UTA cooperation on historical photos), and community engagement across council districts.
Warren outlined proposed city activities and partner initiatives: planting 150 trees per month through Parks and Recreation, archival work with UTA, a historical exhibit, digital content series, and coordinating with local institutions (6 Flags, Levitt Pavilion, Medical City Arlington, Chamber of Commerce) to incorporate anniversary themes into their programming. He said staff will ask the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation to help fund some promotional items and legacy materials.
"On your next agenda for the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation Board, there will be a request to help us cover some of the expenses related to this," Warren said. He added that the plan emphasizes distributed celebration beyond downtown so every council district can take part.
Council members offered congratulatory remarks and suggested additional partners and venues. Warren said staff will continue to refine the schedule and provide follow-up materials to council and the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation.
