Commission hears progress on Mississippi River Trail signage and new Plan Your Trip app launch

Peter McDonough, senior landscape architect and Great River Road program manager, updated the commission on a two-pronged transportation agenda: the Mississippi River Trail (MRT) sign and logo legal process and an inventory of wayfinding signage for the Great River Road’s 90-plus interpretive centers.
He said the MRT logo and signage process is moving to the 10-state MRPC level for legal review and finalization so other states can adopt the signage once paperwork is complete. "Now the other states are going to there are some legal things that need to be finished up," McDonough said, describing work led by an attorney in La Crosse.
McDonough also described a template being developed for standardized turn-by-turn wayfinding and photographic documentation of interpretive centers, with an intern-supported inventory goal to have the template completed for broader state use ahead of the 2026 meeting.
Separately, MnDOT rebuilt the Plan Your Trip app ahead of the Great River Road month. Commissioners praised the early delivery and voted to draft a letter of thanks for the staff member who led the rebuild. "He got it done, and the links were provided by the wonderful partners at MnDOT," Chris said.
No formal votes were required for the MRT legal work or the inventory; both were described as ongoing projects with milestones to return to the commission for review.
