The Bristol Bay Borough Assembly on Feb. 2 introduced Ordinance 20-26-o7, a local-option ordinance that would add borough authority to regulate the sale, importation and operation of marijuana and marijuana products. The introduction passed on a motion and was set for a public hearing and second reading on March 2, 2026.
Assembly members said the March hearing will be the formal venue for residents to present views and that written comments would be accepted in advance. Mayor Dave Blunt and members encouraged those with strong opinions to attend or send letters to the borough in advance of the public hearing.
Staff and members also directed the manager to research taxation, permitting and licensing options so that, should voters approve a local option, the borough will be ready to implement licensing and fee structures. The assembly specifically asked staff to prepare permanent-license and tax-fee scenarios in time for voters or to inform council decisions if the measure moves forward.
The introduction does not adopt policy; it schedules public deliberation. The assembly highlighted the need for public input and asked for detailed staff work on licensing, tax authority and regulatory frameworks ahead of the March hearing. No formal vote on operation or taxation was taken at the Feb. 2 meeting.
