Lauderhill parks director outlines renovation and new-park projects under proposed bond

Scott Newton, Lauderhill’s parks and recreation director, said the proposed bond would fund improvements across the city’s 26 parks, including new playgrounds, pavilion replacements, pool resurfacing and athletic-turf projects to increase usable play time.
"So, we have 26 parks in the city of Lauderdale," Newton said, and he outlined area-specific projects: East Lauderhill (Lauderhill 6 12) would get outdoor bleachers, a pavilion, irrigation and lighting upgrades; a new passive park is proposed for the northeast section near 21st and 46th Avenue; West Kenlark would receive a track, fitness-trail equipment, storage and outdoor restrooms for youth programs; and Central Otter Hill/John Mullen Park would receive pool canopy replacement, playground renovations, trail resurfacing and sports lighting.
Newton also described larger projects such as an amphitheater for outdoor events, resurfacing pools, dugout and field renovations at Westwind Park, a proposed splash pad, and expanded parking at parks that host large events to help with seasonal festivals. He said field conversions to artificial turf are planned where intensive use has made grass impractical.
Newton framed many requests as coming from the community: benches, lighting and digital marquis were requested by neighborhood groups and youth sports organizations, he said. If voters approve the bond, staff will return with project sequencing and schedules for park work.
