The Needham Finance Committee approved a retirement-board proposal to raise the contributory retirement base from $18,000 to $20,000.
Michelle Mallacott, town accountant and chair of the retirement board, explained that the change would apply the annual cost-of-living adjustment to the first $20,000 of pensionable income and that the retirement board brought the recommendation to better align with peer communities. "We have 488 retirees," Mallacott said, and committee discussion included an estimate for the net annual increase in payouts cited during the meeting at about $60,060. Committee members asked for comparative data and discussed the distributional impact (for example, 31 retirees were said to have pensions between $18,000 and $20,000 and would see increases proportionate to the new base).
The committee moved, seconded and approved the article to be placed on the warrant. The retirement board and town accountant will provide comparative figures and documentation for town meeting members as requested.
