Pontiac leaders praise community response after Carriage Place water-main evacuation

Council members and city staff reported on a swift, coordinated response after a major water-main failure forced evacuation at Carriage Place Apartments (also called Carriage Circle) the night before the March 3 meeting.
President Adrian Austin, Councilwoman Regina Campbell and Mayor McGinnis credited the fire department, water utility crews, police, Lighthouse/South Oakland Shelter, Pontiac Housing Commission, local churches (including Woodside Church) and neighborhood volunteers for providing immediate shelter, transportation, meals and hotel placements. Director Jack McIntyre and deputy mayor were singled out for emergency on-site coordination.
Council said the building’s heat, electricity and plumbing issues were resolved quickly, residents were re-housed and the building was reoccupied the following day. Council asked staff to follow up on maintenance and to report back on any systemic issues to reduce the chance of future incidents.
