College Station council approves three-field Veterans Park baseball complex concept, moves to schematic design

The College Station City Council unanimously approved a concept plan for a three-field baseball complex at Veterans Park and directed staff to begin schematic design immediately.

Kelsey Hayden, parks staff, presented the steering-committee-backed concept: three artificial-turf fields (the middle field a championship field), a championship seating package totaling about 2,500 spectator seats (about 1,500 fixed seats plus picnic decks and berm seating), two covered batting cages, food-truck pedestals and a full concession/press building, a warm-up turf area, and the addition of approximately 290 parking spaces adjacent to University Drive. "All three fields are proposed to be lit," Hayden said, answering council questions about evening use.

Council members praised the multiuse design and the steering committee's involvement. Members asked staff to mind programming overlaps, parking and pedestrian connectivity; staff said the park has roughly 1,500 existing spaces and the new lot plus programming controls should address peak-event needs. The council passed a motion to approve the concept plan with a unanimous voice vote and asked staff to move the project into schematic design and construction-document phases with a goal of opening in 2027.

The approved concept is nonbinding for partners; a separate letter of intent with the Brazos Valley Bombers was also approved later in the meeting (see "Votes at a glance"). Funding and final construction timelines will be decided during the city's upcoming capital and budgeting process.
