NAU students present climate‑vulnerability assessment for Sedona; wildfire and water top resident concerns

A student team from Northern Arizona University presented a climate‑vulnerability assessment for Sedona that combines climate projections, local hydrologic trends and community input. The team highlighted wildfire and water as the highest‑risk sectors, with urban‑heat effects and flood exposure also notable along Oak Creek.
Key findings included continuing declines in Oak Creek peak flows over recent decades and modeling that shows groundwater levels remain within state adequacy thresholds under several scenarios but that risk increases without conservation and managed recharge. The students reported 46 survey responses and FestiFall engagement that ranked wildfire and extreme heat as the community’s top concerns; respondents generally supported city‑level climate actions.
Recommendations included expanding energy‑efficiency retrofit programs targeted to older and economically vulnerable housing, a HEPA filter distribution program for poor‑air‑quality periods, improved wildfire evacuation communication and signage for visitors, updated stormwater and culvert capacities tied to higher‑intensity rainfall, and further study of managed aquifer recharge as a policy tool.
Council thanked the team and asked staff to incorporate the final report into upcoming budget and planning work; the students said the final report will be delivered to the city in the coming days.
