At its Sept. 24 meeting the Catalina Foothills Unified School District Governing Board unanimously approved two sets of policy revisions: changes to hiring policies for professional and support staff and edits to attendance-exclusion and exemption policies.
Associate Superintendent Mindy Westover said the hiring-policy revisions (GCF for professional staff and GDF for support staff) add specific language to exclude from employment any individual who has pleaded guilty or no-contest, been convicted of, or is awaiting trial for offenses that include dangerous crimes against children, conduct with a minor, and offenses that require registration as a sex offender. Westover said the legal reference language was added and that a minor wording correction inserting '4 offenses' was included on the GCF policy before the vote.
"We added those to both the GCF, which is the professional staff hiring and the GDF support staff hiring," Westover said. The board approved the amended policies on a voice vote.
The board also approved revisions to policy and accompanying regulations and exhibits in the JHD series (JHD, JHDR, JHDEA, JHDEB) to align with the state statute cited in the packet, to add the word "registered" before "nurse practitioner" where appropriate, and to replace references to "certified" health professionals with "licensed." Westover said the changes clarify which medical professionals the district will accept documentation from when addressing chronic health conditions.
Both measures passed after motions and seconds and passed on voice votes; the chair announced the hiring-policy motion carried 5–0. District staff said the changes are intended to bring the district's policies into compliance with statutory language and to provide clearer operational guidance for school staff.
The board will incorporate any remaining technical edits at the next meeting as needed.
