Cumberland committee approves assistant superintendent's revised contract as he shifts to part-time

The Cumberland School Committee approved the revised contract for Assistant Superintendent Antonio Dimona Jr. in a 7–0 voice vote during its Feb. 26 meeting.

The motion to approve the salary and benefits outlined in the proposed contract was moved by Miss Goldstein and seconded; the committee voted in favor without recorded opposition. The action followed committee review of Policy G6, which requires school committee approval for any employment terms that fall outside the policy’s salary, stipend or benefits ranges.

Superintendent Dr. Thornton praised Dimona’s record in remarks introducing the discussion: “I first met Tony around 15 years ago, and I interviewed him, and I was immediately impressed by his intellect. I hired him, and I don't think I made a mistake.” The chair also highlighted Dimona’s long service and succession planning, saying his willingness to continue serving the district “even as he steps away from a full-time role is truly appreciated.”

Committee members noted Dimona’s 15-year tenure with the district, including service as principal of BF Norton and later as assistant superintendent, and linked his work to district-wide improvements cited by members. The committee also reviewed the G6 policy language read aloud by Miss Goldstein, who emphasized that committee approval is required for contract elements outside the policy ranges.

Under the approved arrangement, Dimona will transition to a part-time assistant superintendent role and continue to support district leadership and ongoing initiatives; the contract’s execution was described as consistent with the superintendent’s responsibilities following committee approval.
