A group of parents urged the Sumner County School Board on Nov. 19 to require an additional four feet of setback for the Beach High School home bleachers so cheerleaders and dancers would be visible from the stands and have adequate performance space.
Steven Sanders, who identified himself as a Beach High parent, said the proposed 21‑foot space still leaves the teams largely invisible: “At 21 feet, we will still not be able to see half of them,” he said, calling a legal memorandum cited by staff “a memorandum full of fear tactics.” Josh Pierce and other speakers said they had not been included in design discussions and asked the board to require engineers, architects and the contract attorney to answer parents’ technical questions in a special meeting.
The director of schools, Dr. Langford, told the board his team had sought the maximum safe change that would not force a complete redesign and rebid of multiple stadium projects.
