The Sumner County School Board approved the director's recommendation to set the starting teacher salary at $50,500 for 2025–26, a step administrators say is intended to improve recruitment during a compressed hiring window; the board incorporated the change into budget planning.
The Sumner County School Board voted on Jan. 21 to adopt the director’s recommendation to set the district’s starting teacher salary at $50,500 beginning in the 2025–26 school year, Director Robert Langford said. The board approved the measure by voice vote after a motion by Mr. Lancaster and a second by Miss Days.
Langford framed the change as a recruitment strategy during a compressed hiring season that begins in March: "Being able to have us vote and approve going to $50,500 puts us up near the top of...Pay," he said, adding that a starting special‑education teacher would start higher (Langford cited $60,500 as a starting figure for SPED in discussion). He said the district will build remaining budget buckets around that anchor figure as state revenue projections (and the governor's budget and TISA figures) arrive in February–April.
Board members asked staff about communication plans and whether the pay figure would be advertised to prospective applicants ahead of the hiring window. Langford said the district plans to promote the starting pay at recruiting fairs and on its website, and to include the figure in the formal budget to be approved later. He cautioned there are revenue uncertainties: last year’s process produced an $1.3 million swing late in the budget process, he said, and staff will monitor state funding (TISA) and county revenue updates.
The motion to approve the compensation recommendation passed by voice vote; the board then approved related amendments to the general purpose and federal budgets by voice votes later in the meeting. Administrators said staff will return with detailed budget breakdowns and projected personnel changes as revenue information becomes available.
