Travis Bridal took the oath of office before the Lufkin City Council on March 3, officially becoming Lufkin's new police chief.
City staff told the council Bridal was selected following the retirement of Chief David Thomas after 36 years of service. According to a staff statement, Bridal is a Lufkin native and began his law-enforcement career in local detention before joining the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1994; he later served as a Texas Ranger and rose to the rank of major. Staff said Bridal led a special operations group for the Rangers prior to his recent retirement.
Mayor (S1) administered the oath and congratulated Bridal, saying many in the community had expressed positive support for the appointment. Bridal repeated the required oath to 'faithfully execute the duties' of the office of the Lufkin Police Department and to 'preserve, protect, and defend' the constitutions and laws. Attendees and council members welcomed Bridal and were invited to a reception following the meeting.
The council provided the ceremonial oath during its regular meeting; no further personnel actions were taken during the session.
