Clay County commissioners voted to authorize hiring two county positions after department heads detailed workload and staffing shortfalls.
The assessor reported the office is managing roughly 9,300 parcels and that state guidance suggests about 3,500 parcels per certified appraiser. The assessor asked for either an additional certified appraiser or a clerk to handle data entry and free certified staff for field work and training; the assessor’s packet estimated adding a clerk at roughly $60,000 in annual cost.
The State’s Attorney described the need for additional support staff (a legal assistant or legal secretary), estimating an annual county cost between about $63,000 and $72,050 depending on credentials and benefits. He stressed that support staff would improve front-office service, document scanning and allow attorneys to spend more time on diversion programs and case work.
Commissioners, citing stronger-than-expected surplus-cash results, agreed funding is available and a motion to authorize filling the two positions (Renee and Michael were named as the positions to fill) was approved by voice vote.
Hiring timelines will depend on office space and the assessor’s planned move to new workspace later this spring.
