Commission approves vehicle-wrapping business at 2712 West Division Street, 7-0

On June 18 the Arlington Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a specific-use permit for vehicle wrapping at 2712 West Division Street, making the permit specific to the applicant and attaching staff-recommended conditions.

Principal planner Clifford Goldston told the commission that the proposal—a 1,000-square-foot leased space inside an existing masonry building in a light-industrial district—fits the definition of an "auto repair garage major" in the UDC but that the applicant's proposed activity is limited to vehicle wraps (film applied to change a vehicle's appearance) performed indoors. Goldston summarized staff conditions: the SUP be nonassignable and nontransferable, hours limited to 6 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Sunday, landscape buffer plantings provided, and no exterior work other than signage.

Applicant Michael Thrash described wrapping as applying a rolled vinyl film to a vehicle after cleaning and using a squeegee and heat gun. "All I do is vehicle wraps…It's film. It's like a sticker," Thrash told the commission, adding he expected to handle about two cars per week and would perform all work indoors.

Commissioner Blake moved to approve the permit with staff considerations; a commissioner seconded and the commission voted 7-0 to approve the SUP. Suraj Sregmi, one of the property owners, spoke in support of the applicant. The approved permit requires the applicant to follow the staff conditions, keep work inside the building, and maintain the landscape buffer as specified.

With the vote the commission closed the docket and adjourned the meeting.
