Council allocates Arlington’s 91 TAD votes, nominates Syeda Sayed for vacant seat

The Arlington City Council, meeting in its afternoon session on Dec. 9, reviewed updated tallies for the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TAD) ballot and set how the city will cast its 91 votes at tonight’s meeting.
Ethan, a city staff presenter, told the council that vote totals had shifted over the day and reminded members that nominations for the TAD replacement are due Dec. 26. “There are still plenty of votes out there that all candidates are still viable,” Ethan said, noting the city can allocate its 91 votes across candidates or not cast some votes.
Council member Pham proposed a specific split and asked colleagues to nominate Syeda Sayed to fill the vacancy left by Fort Worth Councilman Alan Blaylock’s resignation. Pham argued for distributing at least a single vote to lower-ranked candidates as an insurance measure: “If you don't give somebody 1 vote…and they get in later because all the tax entities gave more vote…you cannot do a recall,” he said.
After discussion and updated counts from staff, the mayor’s office read back the council’s intended allocation: Michael Allred 1, Wendy Burgess 53, Eric Crowell 33 and Syeda Sayed 4. Several council members said they had checked with neighboring municipalities and small taxing entities and supported the plan, or a modest adjustment to close the Burgess–Crowell gap.
Ethan told the council that the TAD board will appoint the Blaylock replacement and that appointees must be selected within 45 days after nominations are received. The council agreed to place both the vote allocation and the Syeda Sayed nomination on the evening agenda so the city’s official ballot and nomination would be recorded.
The council’s action tonight is procedural (allocating municipal votes and forwarding a nomination); the final appointment is made by the TAD board per the nominating rules discussed in the meeting.
