Ordinance Committee continues public hearing on cannabis dispensary hours to April 28

Councilor Israel Rivera framed a public hearing on March 4 that was filed to consider amending the ordinance that sets operating hours for cannabis dispensaries. Rivera said the request was put forward after discussions with the former economic development director and industry representatives who suggested expanding hours — for example, earlier in the morning to serve customers leaving work — to increase competitiveness and revenue.
Rivera said he would prefer the item be considered after staff outreach and additional industry input. Chair Meg McGrath Smith reported she had spoken with the new economic development director, Eric Nakajima, who asked for time to reach out to interested companies and to prepare presentations. With no public commenters present, the committee voted to continue the public hearing to Tuesday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. so staff and industry representatives can attend and provide detail.
The committee did not change the ordinance at this meeting; the current ordinance sets dispensing hours from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
