At a meeting of the Kane County Economic Development Board, members voted to award $30,000 to a community-led project aimed at repairing erosion on a popular trail and improving visitor safety. The board heard that the county’s $30,000 contribution will accompany $35,000 committed by the rec and finance department and leverage volunteer labor and in-kind donations.
The project representative told the board, “So today we're requesting a grant for $30,000 that's going to accompany the $35,000 from the rec and finance department,” and said the funds would help pay for structural engineering work to ensure the repairs meet state and county policies. The presenter said volunteers have provided equipment and local businesses have offered donations and support.
Board members spoke in favor of the project, citing increased visitor traffic and benefits to village-area businesses. A board member noted newly created parking and access improvements have already changed foot traffic at the farmers market and will make local businesses more accessible.
A board member moved to approve the $30,000 allocation and a colleague seconded; the Chair called a verbal vote, members responded “Aye,” and the Chair said the motion passed. The Chair said the board will forward the funding recommendation to the county commission for further action; the commission has the item on tomorrow’s agenda.
The meeting discussion included next steps for volunteers and staff to finalize engineering plans and comply with reporting requirements before work resumes at the site.
