College Station’s City Council opened its Feb. 26 meeting with an awards ceremony recognizing 11 employees nominated by peers for the city’s 2025 Employee of the Year program. Detective Andre Mabel of the police department was named the city’s Employee of the Year.
Colin Killian announced the nominees and described their accomplishments in parks, fire, fiscal services, IT, electric, police, capital projects, water services, planning and public works. Killian said nominees were selected by the city’s executive leadership team.
“Everything good that happens in this city happens because of the thousand‑plus people we have that work for the city,” Mayor Nichols said following the announcements, noting a reception would follow the ceremony.
City Manager Ryan Woods praised the nominees and reminded the council and public that the awards aim to highlight the impact employees have on the community. Killian also presented two additional recognitions: the city impact award to Steven Maldonado Jr., assistant director of water service, for his role in negotiating a regional groundwater export settlement, and the city leadership award to Emily Fisher, director of public works.
The council then recessed for a short reception and returned to the regular agenda later in the evening.
What’s next: The award program is an annual recognition; there was no formal policy or budget decision tied to the ceremony.
