Lewis County adopts 2025–2030 Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste Management Plan

Lewis County commissioners and the county solid waste disposal district unanimously adopted the county's Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste Management Plan for 2025–2030 after a joint public hearing and staff presentations.
Rocky Lyon of Solid Waste introduced the update and turned the presentation to Melanie Case, the county's sustainability program coordinator, who described the plan as a multi-year framework required by state law and developed in coordination with cities, the Lewis County Solid Waste Advisory Committee and a consulting team. Case said the draft had received preliminary approval from the Washington State Department of Ecology and that the county would submit the final plan to Ecology for a 45-day review.
Commissioners asked staff clarifying questions about the plan's scope and components (one commissioner noted the plan's length and level of detail). No members of the public provided oral testimony; staff noted the county had participated in outreach and city council briefings. The BOCC approved adoption by resolution 26-079, and the solid waste disposal district adopted its matching resolution (002-026).
Melanie Case explained the plan looks at solid waste operations across five years with a longer-term outlook, and that Lewis County is the lead planning authority for the county coordinating with incorporated cities. Rocky Lyon noted the plan had been a multiyear effort. The plan will move forward to the Department of Ecology for final review and any required adjustments.
