Shakopee council authorizes bid advertisement for Fire Station 2 renovation

The Shakopee City Council voted Jan. 20 to authorize advertisement for bids for the Fire Station 2 renovation project, a step staff and the fire chief said is necessary to meet future staffing and safety needs.
Shakopee Fire Chief Simon told the council that at a prior meeting the city had authorized CNH Architects and Terra Construction to provide design and construction management services. "This renovation is essential to meet future staffing needs and improve safety," Chief Simon said. He introduced CNH architect John Van Velde, who described changes to create overnight living quarters, expanded locker and shower facilities, a consolidated turnout/decontamination room and a Plymo vent system for equipment bays.
Architect Van Velde said the design adds residential space by converting some former office and conference areas into sleeping quarters, increases storage and locker capacity, expands the kitchen/dayroom and centralizes decontamination washers. "We've added residential space...and there needs to be more storage for people's clothing and so forth," Van Velde said. He also explained that folding HVAC/RTU replacement into the renovation avoids tearing out newly finished ceilings twice.
Councilors pressed staff on equipment age, redundancy and access. Chief Simon said the roof and air handlers date from roughly 2012–2015 and that the station has a backup generator. Van Velde said the card-access system remains but staff will ensure redundancy for emergency entry.
Councilor Delaney moved to approve Resolution R2026-018 authorizing bid advertisement for the Fire Station 2 renovation; Councilor Whiting seconded and the resolution passed by voice vote. Staff said the bid advertisement was scheduled for Jan. 27 with a roughly two- to three-week bid-opening period.
Why it matters: The renovation will reconfigure space for overnight staffing, improve contamination controls and replace aging HVAC components—important to department operations and firefighter safety.
What’s next: Staff will advertise for bids and return to council with bid results and contract recommendations before construction begins.
