Board approves 8-foot ornamental fence at GN Resound site on Dean Lakes Boulevard

The Shakopee Board of Adjustments and Appeals on Feb. 5 approved a conditional use permit allowing an 8-foot ornamental fence in the front yard at 5005 Dean Lakes Boulevard, the site of GN Resound’s North American operations.
City planning staff told the board the subject parcel is 22.77 acres in the business-park zone and that GN Resound (the applicant is acting on behalf of Broadstone SF Minnesota LLC, the property owner) seeks to enclose a shipping and receiving area with an 8-foot black ornamental fence. Staff cited Shakopee city code section 111.02, which allows fencing 8 feet or greater in commercial and industrial areas with an approved CUP.
Staff identified six conditions for approval, including: a building permit for the fence; siting the fence between existing landscaping and the curve outside the drainage and utility easements; designation of the easterly driveway as exit-only with signage; compliance with the city engineering memo dated Jan. 22, 2026; installation of a fire-department key box at the gates; and minimum offsets of 10 feet from the water line and 5 feet from underground electrical lines so that Shakopee Public Utilities has access to the key box and to the transformer.
"They would like to install an 8 foot black ornamental fence... enclosing their shipping and receiving area," city planning staff said during the presentation, and recommended adoption of resolution R2026-2004 approving the CUP with the listed conditions.
After brief clarifying questions from commissioners, a motion to adopt R2026-2004 carried in a roll-call vote with all present voting Aye.
The approval is subject to the six conditions described by staff; the record notes that a building permit and compliance with the engineering and utility conditions are required before fence construction may begin.
