Board adopts multiple course standards and policy updates, sets bid dates for security entrances and approves personnel list

The board approved a batch of curriculum and policy items and recorded several operational updates.
Staff recommended aligning a Southern Community MTH 121E course to a county 'Quantitative Reasoning' dual-credit course; the board approved the alignment. The board also approved content-standards for high-school electives including weight training, lifetime fitness, fitness & conditioning, and a "Music and Movies" course emphasizing analysis, composition and creative expression. Staff said these standards are county-level additions where state-developed standards do not exist.
On policy, the board considered the second of three installments of revisions. Key policy changes included: teacher workload schedules (policy 3251) requiring notice not later than 15 workdays before an employment term for supplemental duties; competency testing alignment with West Virginia Code (cited in the packet); grievance-procedure updates to ensure administrative-law-judge decisions are enforceable in the local circuit court; and incremental wording clarifications to educational program and school choice policies. The board discussed protections for school counselors (policy 2411) clarifying that counselors should spend at least 80% of work time in direct counseling with students and may not take on certain administrative duties without written agreement.
Facilities staff gave progress updates: painting and custodial projects, Mullins PreK–8 demolition progress, and bid openings scheduled for secured entrances at Pine Hall Middle, Oceana Middle and Baylessville on May 27, 2025, and for the Westside practice facility on June 11, 2025 (the latter contingent on state approval of resubmitted drawings). The superintendent also highlighted a well-attended Spring Arts Gala.
Finally the board approved the personnel recommendations presented by staff; a motion was made and seconded and the personnel list was approved by voice vote. The board then voted to enter executive session to discuss a personnel matter.
