Council reviewed the Charter Review Commission’s report and agreed Dec. 15 to move three recommended charter changes toward the May ballot.
Staff (Modesto, speaker 3) told the council that any charter changes would require calling the election by Feb. 2 to appear on the May ballot. Council members discussed several housekeeping edits — removing stray text and updating election-posting language caused by posting-time changes — and debated how often a charter-review commission should meet. The commission recommended changing the frequency from every two years to an interval of between two and six years, scheduled in odd years so legislative changes can take effect.
Council directed staff to prepare draft ballot language and return it to council for review before February so the city attorney can place it in final form if council approves the direction.
No formal vote on the substance of the amendments was recorded at this meeting; the council provided direction to staff to prepare wording and to return drafts for consideration.
