Melissa, representing Habitat for Humanity Southern Brazoria County, told the council the organization builds affordable homes rather than "giving away free homes," sells them at cost to qualifying buyers and collects mortgage payments after closing at a title company. She said homeowners typically stay far longer than typical turnover rates and that the nonprofit’s previous projects in Lake Jackson had included 25 fee waivers.
Councilman Senhania moved to approve the fee waiver, and Councilman Baker seconded the motion. The council approved the request on a voice vote.
The council did not specify the exact dollar amount of the waived permit fees in the discussion. Melissa described the waiver as a modest budget item for the city that can have a "big impact on the cost of the homes for us." The council offered brief thanks and best wishes to the nonprofit before moving to the next item.
